China has long been the focus of investigators searching for counterfeit products. I've seen countless Dateline episodes about fake Gucci bags. But, this is getting serious. The golf industry is under attack. Golf manufacturers are losing millions of dollars to counterfeit sales, many of which go through online channels like eBay and Craigslist. On top of the lost revenue, golf companies are spending millions to investigate the crime because Chinese officials are being less than helpful. Acushnet (makers of Titleist) spend over $2 million per year to fight this crime.
What does this mean for Joe Golfer? You can find some great deals online if you don't care about minor imperfections in the product. If you want the real thing, be careful of the channels you buy from. Fakes may not be so obvious to detect.
